Residence and citizenship
The Law of Foreigners of Republic of Bulgaria is the main legal instrument for regulating and determining regulations and procedures, according to which foreigners are allowed to enter to, reside or leave from Bulgaria as well as their duties and responsibilities. Foreigners in Bulgaria have all the rights and duties according to the Bulgarian laws and ratified international documents, to which Bulgaria is a party, except those for which Bulgarian citizenship is required.

The residence of foreigners in the territory of Republic of Bulgaria is performed on a basis of:

  1. the issued visa according to article 9, paragraph 3 from the Law of Foreigners of Republic of Bulgaria;
  2. international contracts for non-visa or facilitated visa regime;
  3. permission of the agencies for administrative control over foreigners.
Foreigners reside in Bulgaria for short and long-term.

Short-term stay is up to 90 days from the date of entering the country. The period might be extended on behalf of the agencies for administrative control over foreigners due to humanitarian issues.

Long-term stay is:

  1. continuous – with a permission up to 1 year;
  2. permanent – with unlimited period.
