According to the Constitution since 1991, Bulgaria is a Parliamentary Republic.

The Bulgarian parliament – the National Assembly, consists of 240 deputies. The Parliament is responsible for adopting laws, approving the budget, scheduling of presidential elections, election and recall of the Prime Minister and other ministers, declaration of war, deployment of troops outside Bulgaria and ratification of international treaties and agreements.

The President of the Republic is directly elected for 5-year period with a right to one reelection.

He is Head of the State, supreme commander of armed forces and Chairman of the Advisory Council for National Security.

Although he does not possess legislature authority or initiative, the president can return a bill to review although the Parliament can reject the veto by a simple majority vote.

The President and Vice President are elected together.
