National Health Insurance Fund ensures and guarantees free and equal access of the insured people to medical assistance as well as they are free to choose a doctor who have a contract with the regional health insurance fund office.

The aim of the National Health Insurance Fund is to improve health results and the quality of life; to regulate and increase the social, health and economic efficiency of the health expenses; to improve the quality of the services offered and equality in their usage; to introduce mechanisms for worthy payment of the medical specialists as well as a positive change in the relations between doctors and patients.

There is a national health-information center with a single free-of-charge telephone 0800-14-800. This center is developed by the National Health Insurance Fund and the Ministry of Health, supported by the American Agency for International Development.

The purpose of this center is to provide people with timely and recent information about the health system in Bulgaria including medical and dental assistance.
